Q & A with Lotus Nail Spa Manager,
Emily Egelund-Walbeck

Can you please tell us a little about who you are and how you got started in the nail industry?

My name is Emily Egelund-Walbeck. My parents opened their first nail salon 20 years ago when I was only 6 years old. I grew up in the industry, although I never thought this was going to be my career path. Through many twists of fate, when my parents decided to open a second location in a nearby city to the first salon, I knew it was something I wanted to be a part of. At that time I was an esthetician and had my own eyelash extension studio. I made the decision to close that business, go to nail school, and then moved my family to help manage the new salon–Lotus Nail Spa.

What inspired you to open your own salon?

I don't want to take any credit in owning this salon. My parents are the ones who hustled and put the hard work in to make this salon a reality. But, my husband and I do manage the salon and take care of day-to-day operations. I went to university for communications and marketing, so I'm usually the face people see on social media, so that's where some of the confusion is of who owns the salon.

What makes Lotus Nail Spa different than other salons?

We do a lot of things differently. From the beginning, we knew we wanted Lotus Nail Spa to be a more spa-like environment. So we run our salon based on appointments, we ask clients not to use phones and devices while inside, we don't allow children in the space, etc. We try our best to keep things very calm and relaxing. We also streamlined our services. Rather than offering levels of pedicures like most salons do, we offer only one pedicure–the Signature Spa Pedicure–and always use VOESH Pedi in a Box kits for the service.

What are some of the services you provide?

We have our most popular service, the Signature Spa Pedicure. We also offer a basic manicure and spa manicure. We also offer acrylic services, hard gel, and our estheticians offer facial waxing.

Do you upsell to your clients? Can you give up-and-coming salon owners some helpful tips on how to successfully upsell their services?

My biggest tip would be to make a budget for what you can invest into retail products, and buy it. I understand it's hard when you're starting to want to invest into products for retail, but if you can make money without having to perform a service...that's the BEST! VOESH also offers retail displays and the products themselves are so well packaged, that you don't have to set up an extravagant retail area.

What are your favorite VOESH products?

The Hemp Relax Velvet Luxe Vegan Hand & Body Lotion and Pedi in a Box are my absolute favorites, and our clients love them, too! They smell amazing, have wonderful benefits, and are a really unique product to the nail salon industry.
