Self-Love vs. Self-Care: What’s the Difference?

Let’s be real, we could all benefit from some more self-love and self-care in our lives. In honor of our #TakeAMoment campaign, we’re exploring the meaning of self-love and self-care so you can make wellness a top priority every single day. Not sure what the difference is? Don’t worry, we’ll break it down for you.

What is self-love?

Self-love means accepting yourself for all that you are, mentally, physically, emotionally, and so on. It encompasses not only how you treat yourself, but also your thoughts and feelings about yourself. Self-love is a journey; it can take time and doesn’t always come easy. With the influence of the media and people in our lives, we tend to be our own worst critics. Don’t let anyone define your self-worth. Overall, it is important to pay attention to how you feel about yourself. That is all that truly matters!

Here are some ways to practice self-love and be good to yourself:

Be true to yourself
2. Allow yourself to make mistakes
3. Trust yourself
4. Set healthy boundaries
5. Prioritize your well-being
6. Talk about yourself with love
7. Refuse to seek approval or permission
8. Ask for help
9. Set realistic expectations
10. Celebrate your achievements

What is self-care?

Self-care is anything you do that benefits your physical, mental, or emotional health, such as going for a jog or meeting with a therapist. What may work for one person may not always work for another. It is all about listening to what your mind and body need.

Here are some examples of self-care to put your needs first:

Enjoy a manicure or pedicure
2. Read a book
3. Get enough rest and relaxation
4. Spend time outside
5. Exercise
6. Take a bath or shower
7. Write in a journal
8. Organize your space
9. Connect with a loved one
10. Practice mindfulness

Self-love and self-care go hand in hand. Once you truly love and accept yourself (differences and all) and practice self-care, great things will happen! You will be able to show up for yourself and your loved ones and manage your responsibilities with ease. Let go of your fears, erase those negative thoughts, and don’t ever apologize for putting your needs first. You are on your own journey. Remember, there is only one you in this world, and if you’re reading this, we think you’re amazing.
